Role and remit

Kiko Dontchev leads SpaceX's launch operations as Vice President of Launch, with global responsibility for:

  • Launch operations — all launch and recovery activities across SpaceX's facilities in California (Vandenberg Space Force Base) and Florida (Kennedy Space Center / Cape Canaveral)
  • Vehicle integration — pre-launch integration of Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Starship vehicles at launch sites
  • Marine operations — SpaceX's drone ship recovery fleet, which enables rapid reuse of first-stage boosters and is central to the company's launch cadence economics
  • Infrastructure — launch site facilities and ground support equipment across SpaceX's operational sites

Dontchev is a recognised leader in the space launch industry and has been instrumental in achieving the launch cadence that has made SpaceX the world's dominant commercial launch provider.

ASW 2026 role

Kiko Dontchev delivered the keynote address at the CANSO Leadership Summit 2026 (25 May 2026, Myriad Crystal Centre, Lisbon) under the theme "From Vision to Delivery – Skies in Transition." His keynote — scheduled for 14:15–14:45 — offered aviation leaders a perspective on how SpaceX translates bold technical vision into operational reality at scale: a theme directly relevant to the ATM modernisation challenge facing CANSO member ANSPs.

Dontchev also participates in the main conference session "CANSO Operations: From Complexity to Integration: Operationalizing Space Transport Operations in Shared Airspace" — Tuesday 26 May 2026, 13:00–13:50, Frequentis Theatre. Chaired by Vanessa Robertson, this session examines how ANSPs are moving space launch operations from exceptional events requiring ad hoc coordination to routinely managed operations integrated into normal airspace flow management.

About SpaceX

SpaceX is a private American aerospace company founded in 2002 by Elon Musk. It is the world's largest commercial launch provider by mission count, responsible for more orbital launches annually than all other providers combined. SpaceX's Starlink satellite constellation, which operates at low Earth orbit altitudes above FL600, is directly relevant to ATM discussions on higher airspace users and the integration of space operations with civil aviation.
