Role and remit

Alex Bristol leads Skyguide as Chief Executive Officer, responsible for Switzerland's civil and military air navigation services across some of the most complex airspace in Europe. His key areas of responsibility include:

  • Civil and military ATC — Skyguide provides integrated civil-military ATC services, making it directly relevant to the ASW 2026 Defence & Military agenda
  • Swiss airspace strategy — management of one of Europe's busiest overfly corridors and the coordination obligations with FABEC neighbours
  • Digitalisation programme — Skyguide has been an early adopter of remote tower technology and digital controller tools
  • FABEC coordination — Switzerland participates in the FABEC framework as an associated state, requiring active engagement with EUROCONTROL and the six FABEC ANSPs

Bristol began his ATM career as a Heathrow approach controller, spent 18 years at NATS in progressively senior roles, joined Skyguide as Chief Operating Officer in 2011, and became CEO in 2017. His operational background gives him a perspective on ATM modernisation that is grounded in controller experience rather than purely commercial or administrative leadership.

About Skyguide

Skyguide is the Swiss ANSP, responsible for safe air navigation in Swiss airspace and parts of neighbouring countries' airspace. As a state-owned company under a federal concession, Skyguide handles approximately 1.2 million flights annually across its area of responsibility. Switzerland's position at the centre of European airspace makes Skyguide a significant node in the FABEC network and a relevant reference for European ATM integration.
